TSX ends at two-week low after IMF warning

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index marked its lowest close in almost two weeks on Tuesday, tracking a sell-off in world equity markets after the IMF said the global economic slowdown is worsening.

All 10 of the index's sectors fell on a wave of negative signals, including the stark warning from the IMF as it cut its growth forecasts for the second time since April and warned U.S. and European policymakers that failure to fix their economic ills would prolong the slump.

Commodity and financial shares were among the hardest hit. Barrick Gold sank 3.7 percent to C$39.60, Goldcorp Inc lost 3.9 percent to C$43.45 and Manulife Financial fell 3 percent to C$11.95.

"I think the IMF (report) is what people are paying attention to. But it struck me as being a little bit late ... current economic news coming out of the U.S. has been a little bit better rather than worse," said Ian Nakamoto, director of research at MacDougall, MacDougall & MacTier.

Other news from Europe also kept investors on edge as uncertainty about when Spain will apply for a bailout worried markets, as did concerns about Greece's debt load.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> ended down 145.42 points, or 1.17 percent, at 12,273.57. It was the weakest closing level since September 26.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, investors are expected to take their cue from U.S. aluminum producer Alcoa Inc , which kicked off earnings season with a third-quarter loss after Tuesday's market close. <. readability="9">

Analysts forecast third-quarter earnings of S&P 500 <.spx> companies will drop 2.3 percent from the year-ago quarter, according to Thomson Reuters data, which would be the first drop in U.S. quarterly earnings in three years.

Cloud Computing: Changing Technology In 2012 | TechBurgh ...

image thumb1 Cloud Computing: Changing Technology In 2012Technology is ever changing and growing. For a business to survive and for people to have the latest products and service, technology must grow so that business operations run more efficiently so the consumer can enjoy products that make their lives simpler.

So it isn?t surprising that people are jumping on the new technology that is Cloud Computing, often referred to as just the Cloud. The Cloud offers a way for businesses and individuals to save data, files, software applications and other resources in a remote backup data center located on the web. With this new remote backup storage available, it has made working with documents and programs easier.

This is one of the reasons that companies and organizations are spending close to $109 billion on Cloud Computing, with an expected $207 billion expected to be spent by 2016, according to DailyFinance.com. With businesses pouring such funds into software and programs that run on the Cloud, individuals will be seeing a variety of programs and devices become available during the upcoming years.

Mobile Technology Affected By The Cloud

While computers will have access to the backup storage and applications, the Cloud will also be available to all mobile technology. Laptops, smartphones, and tablets will all have access to Cloud technology so long as they have Internet connection. This is a great asset, since these mobile devices have a limited amount of memory and data storage space available to download every application that the mobile user will want to use.

Instead, these software applications can be accessed online without having to be downloaded and installed. This saves valuable disk space and allows mobile users to access the information on the go anywhere in the world. People who travel while on business will have the information and documents they need at the touch of their fingertips on the touchscreen.

Programs Becoming More Compatible With Cloud

Due to this mobile technology of touchscreen combined with Cloud, companies are redesigning programs that will utilize all these features. Microsoft offers a redesigned word processor document for those mobile users who have tablets, according to GantDaily.com. The program combines Cloud Computing with social media networking as touchscreen mobile users can create documents and save them in the remote backup storage.

With software and mobile applications available through Cloud, how will businesses be able to make a profit from consumers? A software company now can have the consumer pay a one-time usage fee for the application, or the consumer can be placed on a pay-as-you-go program where they pay the software company a small fee anytime they want to use the program.

When New Computer Platforms are Available, Tech Innovations Appear

This new computing platform has opened the tech gate for innovators to reap the benefits by creating and adopting new technologies that use Cloud. The year of 2012 will mark the dawn of the computing platform, but it will not be the end of what the tech world will see in computing. It will become an exciting time for consumers and businesses who jump on the bandwagon and accept how Cloud can change how backup data and applications are stored.

Will information be safe on the web from hackers or viruses? Will it make software applications and general computing more efficient for users? Or will technology be able to discover the full possibilities of Cloud? Only time will tell.

World's best wine country hotels

1 day

At Oregon?s?Allison Inn & Spa, you can wake up to a view of Willamette Valley from your terrace, spend the afternoon sampling Pinot Noirs at local wineries, then retreat to the hotel spa for a ?pinotherapy? treatment.

That kind of immersive experience has earned Allison Inn the No. 4 ranking among wine country hotels, based on?Travel + Leisure?readers? votes in the annual?World?s Best Awards survey. The winners come in lots of varietals, from opulent hotels to cozy inns, and turn up in established wine regions (South Africa?s Franschhoek, Argentina?s Mendoza) and less-expected destinations like Arizona?s Verde Valley and the Mount Etna area of Sicily, where that volcanic soil can work wonders.

Slideshow: See where the world's best wine country hotels are

Napa Valley, Calif., certainly has experience catering to the wine-focused traveler. ?Our customers come here to experience wine country from head to toe,? says George Goeggel, managing partner of?Auberge du Soleil?in the Napa Valley, one of the area?s first boutique resorts. ?We try to embody the wine country lifestyle in all aspects, from a glass of wine at reception to the local bottles on the menu to the crushed grapes in our spa treatments.?

That sentiment rings true in Santa Barbara, Calif., as well. ?We estimate that 94 percent of our guests are wine lovers,? says Seamus McManus, managing director of?San Ysidro Ranch, whose 1,600-bottle collection features an abundance of local labels. To satisfy their expectations, the hotel offers winery tours, hosts dinners with nearby vintners and stocks local wines in each of its cottages.

Not to be left out, the East Coast has its own properties among this year?s winners. Virginia?s rolling hills nurture? The Inn at Little Washington?as well as?Keswick Hall, decked out with hunt-club prints and Chippendale chairs and host of regular themed wine dinners.

Even select urban hotels have caught on to the interest in wine tourism and offer guided day trips to wineries within a short drive. The renovated?Four Seasons, Firenze, occupies a glorious frescoed palazzo with a pool and eight-acre park. It stocks nearly 400 bottles at Winery restaurant and makes a refined base for guided excursions into Chianti, 40 minutes away.

No matter which wine-country hotel you choose, one thing?s for sure: you won?t go home thirsty.

Oil falls in Asia on sluggish US hiring

BANGKOK (AP) ? Multiple signs that the global economy is not headed for an upswing in the near term kept oil prices on their down trend Monday.

Benchmark crude for November delivery was down fell 37 cents to $89.51 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Oil fell more than 2 percent Friday as traders fret that jobs aren't growing fast enough in the U.S. to significantly boost demand for fuel. The contract closed down $1.83 to $89.88 per barrel.

The economy created 114,000 jobs in September, in line with what economists had expected but not an indication of strong jobs growth. The U.S. Labor Department said the unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent, the first time it's been below 8 percent in nearly four years.

In a new sign of a weak global economy, the World Bank cut the growth outlook for developing Asia-Pacific economies for 2012 to 7.2 percent from its May forecast of 7.6 percent. The bank cited weak global demand due to the lackluster U.S. recovery and Europe's recession.

The bank also cut its forecast for China, the region's biggest economy, to 7.7 percent from May's 8.2 percent.

Oil jumped 4 percent on Thursday following a 4 percent decline on Wednesday. Traders have been trying to gauge the strength of global oil demand while also watching developments surrounding Syria for any signs of a disruption in supplies from the Middle East.

In London, Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 46 cents to $111.56 a barrel.

Among other energy futures traded in New York:

? Natural gas rose 1.3 cents to $3.409 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil fell 1.1 cents to $3.145 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline was unchanged at $2.953 per gallon.

(AP) ? Munich's famed celebration of beer, the Oktoberfest, is drawing to a close after some 6.4 million visitors downed an estimated 6.9 million liter mugs of Bavarian brew ? some 14.6 million pints.

Organizers said they were satisfied with this year's event, which opened Sept. 22 and ends Sunday ? although visitor numbers were lower than last year.

Festival director Dieter Reiter says that's because the festival grounds were reduced to accommodate an agricultural fair which takes place every four years, news agency dapd reported. In 2011, the Oktoberfest drew some 6.9 million visitors, who downed well over 7 million liters.

The Oktoberfest draws visitors from across the world ? many of whom try out traditional Bavarian dress. Reiter says: "Purely from a visual point of view, there are only Bavarians."

Internet is the motor engine of global growth in the 21st century ...

Internet is the motor engine of global growth in the 21st century - OECD

Internet is the motor engine of global growth in the 21st century - OECD

The top 250 ICT firms by revenue boosted employment by 4pc in 2010 and 6pc in 2011, with hiring growing the fastest among internet firms which grew employment by 29pc, according to the OECD Internet Economy Outlook 2012.

Google and Amazon added 50pc more employees between 2010 and 2011.

According to the OECD study, the internet economy now accounts for 13pc of American business output. This underlines the importance of the internet as an important source of growth in a period of economic downturn and a core component of the broader economy.

The report claims that if the internet grows 1pc faster in one of two otherwise identical countries, GDP growth in the country with more internet growth will be up to 0.025pc higher.

ICT sector employment is highest in the US, accounting for more than 30pc of the OECD total, followed by Japan (16pc) and Germany (9pc).

Electronics and communications equipment firms accounted for the largest share of R&D investment in 2011 by the top 250 firms, with almost 50pc (US$46bn and US$28bn, respectively). Semiconductors accounted for 16pc (US$26bn), followed by software and IT equipment firms with an average of around 13pc each (US$22bn).

Weathering the downturn

The IT services industry weathered the 2009 downturn better than manufacturing, quickly rebounding to positive growth in early 2010. This is likely due to increasing specialisation in ICT services across OECD countries, while manufacturing has shifted to lower-cost production areas, according to the report.

The strength of the services sector is partially the result of the increasing role ICTs play in helping businesses become more efficient. Firms may look to ICTs to cut costs during downturns, creating a continued demand for ICT services as other budgets are cut. The same is true for the telecoms sector, which continued to perform strongly during the crisis, as households and individuals today consider them essential services and prefer to cut back on other expenses.

Total worldwide ICT spending is estimated to reach US$4.40bn in 2012, of which 58pc (US$2.57bn) is on communications services and equipment, 21pc (US$910bn) on computer services, 12pc (US$539bn) on computer hardware and 9pc (US$385bn) on software.

Estimates suggest that in 2012, software spending will increase more rapidly (by 7.6pc a year) than computer hardware (6.1pc a year), as hardware prices continue to fall.

Spending on communications, both services and equipment, will also increase rapidly (by 7.6pc), reflecting the uptake of more advanced services and the rapid spread of mobile services in developing countries.

The structure of ICT spending is slowly shifting, says the report, with consumer spending now making up one-third of the total ICT market. This is mainly driven by increasing demand for mobile devices (smartphones, netbooks, tablets).

ICT spending is also growing faster in the natural resources sector, followed by the construction and the energy and utilities sector, possibly owing to the commodities boom and the shift to ?smart? infrastructures.

Witches Brew Smoothie ~ a Raw and Vegan Recipe for Halloween!

serves 4 ~$1.43 per serving

  • 1 head romaine ($2.29)
  • 3 ripe bananas ($.45)?1 lb frozen mango ($2.69)
  • water for blending
  • 1/4 cup beet juice ($.30)

A basic green smoothie can easily become witched brew. Add a beet hand for creepy effect.

In a blender, with about a half cup water (or more, if needed), blend the romaine until very smooth. Even a small blender will do this well if the greens are blended first. Add the banana and frozen mango and blend until smooth. Serve in a punch bowl or your favorite cauldron, if desired.

For the hand you;ll need a latex glove. Rinse the inside of the glove well and fill with water and the beet juice. Make a knot in the top of the glove, or tie shut with a rubber band. Freeze for several hours or overnight, until frozen solid. Run under hot water for a second or two and then peel the glove from the hand. Put in the center of your witches brew. This serves four, so there are plenty of chilly fingers to go around.

Andreessen Horowitz invests $15 million in website Rap Genius

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Venture capitalist Ben Horowitz is famous for starting his blog posts with rap lyrics. Now, he will be putting his money into the mix.

His firm, Andreessen Horowitz, announced Wednesday a $15 million investment in Rap Genius, a website using crowdsourcing to dig into and explain arcane details of rap lyrics.

Think of Rap Genius as the Talmud, Horowitz said in a phone interview on Wednesday, referring to the Jewish text that interprets the Old Testament.

As an example, Horowitz cited a Lil Wayne lyric, "real G's move in silence like lasagna." Click on it, and Rap Genius explains the singer is referring to gangsters and the silent g in lasagna.

"If you don't get it, don't be ashamed," reads the Rap Genius note accompanying the line. "?uestlove from The Roots didn't either." Embedded in the note is a Tweet from the musician known as Questlove citing the lyric with the question #AmIGettinold?

The company is slowly spreading to other categories such as literature, political speeches, and science papers.

"We think the community will continue to expand beyond rap into all culture," wrote Horowitz's colleague, Marc Andreessen, in a blog post announcing the investment.

Horowitz first met Rap Genius's co-founders Mahbod Moghadam, Ilan Zechory, and Tom Lehman last year when he visited business mentoring program Y Combinator, which they were attending. The three met as undergraduates at Yale University.

It is not immediately clear how Rap Genius will make money; Horowitz called the company's business model "TBD" (or To Be Determined).

"If they succeed in the mission, and they end up annotating the Internet, there's a huge audience for that," Horowitz said. At that point, a path to revenue would emerge, he added.

Andreessen Horowitz, founded three years ago, announced in January it had raised a $1.5 billion fund, its third. It has invested in some of the country's hottest start-ups, including online bulletin board Pinterest and social-networking site Facebook.

Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite is the new king of e-readers

14 hrs.

Until now, I was convinced the e-reader was a goner. After all, that black-on-gray "e-ink" display technology has peaked and cheap tablets are eating up what's left of buyer interest. Then I fell in love with Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite. It solves two of e-ink's biggest problems ? lousy contrast and lack of integrated lighting ??while preserving the e-reader's core advantages: readability, affordability and insanely long battery life.

E-ink is opaque ??unlike see-through?LCD ? and because of that, it's a lot harder to light it.?There's no way to "back light" the thing;?you have to light it from the side. When Sony tried to do this in 2008, it destroyed the value of the e-ink screen with oppressive glare, even when the light was off. Nobody bought that product, and Sony doesn't sell a light-up e-reader now. This past April, Barnes & Noble introduced its Nook SimpleTouch with GlowLight, and while that reader does a far better job of preserving the e-ink's readability, the lighting looks uneven.

Amazon stayed away from e-ink?lighting tricks until this fall, and the wait has paid off. The technology used to light-up the new Kindle is more advanced than anything I've seen previously: Despite the limitation of an LED array ? in this case, four tiny?lights?buried at the bottom of the screen ? the entire screen glows with near-perfect evenness, no matter how bright or dim you set it.

What surprised me about the Paperwhite wasn't that Amazon finally cracked the lighting problem. It's that the lighting actually solves the other big e-ink?problem: contrast. E-readers have long suffered the criticism that their pictures aren't really black-on-white, but black-on-gray. The reading experience falls short of greatness, no matter how "easy on the eyes" the technology is supposed to be.

By some color-temperature trickery, the Paperwhite's light system turns gray into white. Not only do you leave the light on all the time, but it is ideally kept?at its brightest in all but direct sunlight (where you can't see the lighting). And speaking of direct sunlight, let me assure you that the Paperwhite retains the?outdoor virtue of e-ink?despite the lighting system and the capacitive touch sensor layer.

The other thing e-readers will continue to lord over tablets is battery life. Amazon says the Paperwhite gets up to eight weeks on a single charge, but that's only under certain conditions: that the wireless is turned off, the light intensity is set to 10 (max is 24) and you read just half an hour each day. Odds are, your habits won't align with this perfectly, so you may have to charge it more than every two months. But I will say that since I do most of my leisure reading at night after we turn the lights out, I have had the lighting set near the bottom.?

So, do I have any gripes? Sure. On the technical side, it's a little annoying that there's no ambient light sensor ? you have to mess with the lighting yourself every time you change environments. But it's easy to do it, so that's not a true concern.

In the box you find a USB cable but no charger, nothing you can plug in the wall. Chances are, you already have something like this from a phone, iPad or previous Kindle, but if you need one, it's $10 extra. Alternatively, you can just charge it every so often by plugging it into your computer.

Previous Kindles have had speakers, and advanced functions like MP3 playback and text-to-speech narration ? this Kindle is more streamlined, though it does have the "experimental browser" that we've seen on Kindles from the start.?

A much more serious nuisance is that, for the starting price of $119, you have to put up with ads on the lock screen and at the bottom of the home screen. Even when you pay the $20 bounty to opt out of Amazon's "special offers," you still get a stream of recommended titles on your home screen, and those never go away. (Seriously, Amazon, how is that not an ad?)

Barnes & Noble has retaliated, dropping the price of its ad-free (and incredibly long-named) Nook SimpleTouch with GlowLight from $139 to $119. And Barnes & Noble wants to ensure that shoppers know that the Nook does in fact come with a wall charger. If all things were equal, this would be a compelling proposal, but things are not equal. If you don't live inside a Barnes & Noble, the Nook's advantages fall short of the Paperwhite's superior technology.?

If you are a frequent Amazon shopper with a $79-per-year Prime membership, then a Kindle gets you one additional benefit: One free "lending library" book per month, including the Harry Potter series, "Hunger Games" and a ton of other bestsellers.

So if you don't care about ads, then the Paperwhite's $119 starting price is a bargain. Eliminate the ads and buy a charger and you get to about $150, still not bad. If you don't have Wi-Fi, you'll have to get the 3G version, which is $179 with ads, $199 without ? a bit more steep, perhaps, but not a terrible one-time payment, especially for someone who doesn't have home broadband.

Amazon's growing less abashed about trying to get you to spend more money ? and I think there'll be a point where it backfires. But for now, the Paperwhite's virtues outweigh any of the tacky marketing, and it can be declared hands down the best e-reader yet, without any need for qualifiers.

Help me advise and support my partner who is worried sick about ...

Help me advise and support my partner who is worried sick about her aging, sick parents

I'm putting this out there for some advise from strangers, because I find myself rather paralysed as to how to help my partner, without being a totally selfish dick.

Background: her parents are 70 and in poor health. Her mother had a stroke at 40 which has left her with considerable disabilities. Her father has recently recovered fro prostrate cancer, which has left him weak ? a much diminished man. All this poor health is exacerbated by their very heavy drinking and smoking, which seems to be their only enjoyment in life. They have few friends and are pretty much housebound, with her father being the sole carer for her mother.

We live in London, a good 5 hours drive away from their home in Wales. Her brother lives in Scotland, which is a flight away, and her sister lives even further away in Germany. So there are no immediate relatives close by. Her sole Uncle ? her mother's brother ? also lives several hours away and is not known for his family responsibilities.

Back to the present, and her father's doctors have discovered a shadow on his lung. He has had a bad cough for several months which he has been ignoring. His biopsy is this week. Obviously everyone is thinking the worst, considering his 60 years of heavy smoking.

This potential news has sent the family into a spin ? with her mother, in particular, in sheer panic at the thought of being left alone. She's on the phone nightly crying, begging my partner to promise she won't end up in a home if her father dies, and in all honestly, if it IS lung cancer, I can't see that he has the strength or the will to fight it. It already feels like he has given up.

My partner just doesn't know what to do and I can see her making the leap to wanting to move back to Wales or have her mother move in with us. This thought horrifies me, if I'm honest. Her mother would need round the clock care, which we are not equipped to provide, with very busy work lives. I also think it would have a terrible impact on our relationship. I know this is utterly selfish, but I honestly don't think I, and we, could cope with that impact on our lives. He mother could live for another 20 years.

I don't know what to do, or what to say to my partner, who is desperate for someone to advise her what to do. I'm afraid to open my mouth, for I fear that anything I say will be totally selfish. Stepping back, I DO think having her move here would be no good for anyone, uprooting her mother from her small town to a big, scary city where she knows no one and i DO think she would be better staying in Wales, in a home where she would have a more social existence and proper care, but when I say this in my head I just feel selfish.

I realise this post makes me sound like I have written her father off as dead already, and I do keep saying we should wait for the results before going into full panic, but her parents are doing nothing to plan for the future and my parter needs someone to guide her.

Sorry for the ramble. I'm happy to hear any thoughts.
