The Challenges of Running an Online Social Network or Internet Forum

It?s not easy running an online social network and keeping the peace is a lot like trying to keep all the relatives from arguing over politics at the Thanksgiving Table. If someone starts really causing problems, it is amazing how others tend to take it so personally. And well, lord help you if you have to terminate someone?s account for not following proper online behavior, that opens up a whole new can of worms.

One thing everyone should be aware of is if any social online network deletes someone or a blog company deletes an account, the individuals go berserk, and they will want revenge, and they will do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to get that revenge. I read an interesting research paper on this subject.

So, this is one of the pitfalls of leadership online, and the damage one person can do to a company online in a year or two is unbelievable.

I?ve seen it and even experienced it when discharging problematic folks from our groups, forums, think tank, (very small) social blog network. The amount of trash talk and condemnation gives too much power to the individual in that case.

It happens to countries too that try to censorship bloggers. Large corporations that do billions of dollars have watched years of brand name building and value, be degraded in short periods of time. Perhaps, you can see why deleting someone?s account on a social network can be so utterly disastrous. Suffice it to say, you better know what you are getting into if you decide to take a leadership role in an online forum or blogging type social network. Think on this.
