Jan Wahl Movie Review: Bel Ami

BEL AMI (R)
After seeing Robert Pattinson in Water for Elephants, it was clear this young actor had talent beyond the Twilight series. In this new period romance, Bel Ami (R), he plays a man traveling through 1890?s Paris, from the poor cockroach infested garrets to opulent homes and salons.
Using his wits and seduction, he goes from poverty to wealth. His women include Uma Thurman as the wife of a journalist; Christina Ricci and Kristen Scott Thomas also take an interest in him and his future.
Pattinson anchors it all as the poor boy coming to the big city to make good, and it is a journey worth taking with him. The movie also shows the power of sex and politics and the obsession of celebrity.
Directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, based on the novel by Guy de Maupassant.

YOUR SISTER?S SISTER (R)
Writer and director Lynn Shelton tells the rich, deep story of a man who is reeling from the loss of his brother. Mark Duplass plays the troubled young man; his brother?s girlfriend (Emily Blunt) offers the family cabin to him, where he meets another sister coming out of romantic and sorrow. Rosemarie DeWitt plays Blunt?s sister, and their relationship is the catalyst for conversation, girt, comedy and forgiveness.
